Alameda County District Attorney Charges Defendant After Two Murders

DA Pamela Price Approves Murder Charges with Multiple Enhancements

Oakland, CA. September 7, 2023 – The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Defendant Amadi Dijuan Monroe with second degree murder for the shooting of Jerald Clark at 24th and Telegraph in Oakland on August 8, 2023.  A second charge for the murder of Brenda Diaz, Monroe’s ex-girlfriend, is pending.

Defendant Monroe also faces charges of felon in possession of a firearm and multiple enhancements for shooting from a vehicle to commit the murder and based on numerous allegations of gun violence endangering public safety.

Defendant Monroe was out on bail after he was charged with shooting at a vehicle in the same neighborhood in March 2023. Investigators tracked him down and arrested him in Yolo County and returned him to Alameda County. Following a preliminary hearing in July, he was able to bail out of Santa Rita County Jail on those charges by posting $200,000 bail on July 27, 2023. At the time Monroe was facing 5 – 8 years in state prison.

Investigators believe that Monroe shot and killed Brenda Diaz on or about August 5th, possibly in Contra Costa County, and then drove back into Alameda County where he shot and killed Clark. Investigators say Ms. Diaz’ body was in the passenger seat of Monroe’s vehicle when he shot Clark on August 8th. Monroe has not yet been charged for her death because of jurisdictional issues.

If convicted of the murder of Jerald Clark, Monroe faces a sentence of thirty (30) years to life. In accordance with Special Directive 23-01, the District Attorney’s Office is pursuing an enhancement under Penal Code Section 190(d) which increases Monroe’s exposure for an additional 5 years because he shot from a vehicle, and Penal Code Section 12022.53(b) which adds an additional 10 years because he used a gun. If convicted of the murder of Ms. Diaz, he faces an additional minimum of 15 years to life. His prior charges are still pending as well.
