June 25, 2024
OAKLAND, CA—Today, DA Pamela Price announced that Assistant District Attorney Evanthia Pappas has been appointed to serve as interim Chief of Prosecutors in the new Prosecutions Division at the Alameda County District Attorney’s office. This development is part of the recent announcement of the office’s reorganization, which has created three new divisions, including the Gender Justice and Advancing Justice divisions.
ADA Pappas joined DA Price’s administration in 2023 as the head of the Domestic Violence Unit. She is transitioning from leading the Domestic Violence Team at the Family Justice Center to her new interim role as Chief of Prosecutors. In her new role, she will lead the Prosecution Units in the office’s various branches, which are now consolidated into the Prosecution Division. She will also oversee special prosecution teams, including the Organized Retail Theft Prosecution Unit or ORCA, Hate Crimes, Major Crimes, the Alameda County Narcotics Task Force, and the Auto Theft Task Force.
ADA Pappas has 25 years of experience as a prosecutor specializing in domestic violence and special victim prosecution. Highlights of her distinguished career include Managing the Domestic Violence Unit at the San Francisco District Attorney’s office. She has also worked as a prosecutor in the San Diego and Sonoma County District Attorney’s offices, handling all types of criminal prosecutions, including homicide cases. Evanthia is a statewide and national expert on domestic violence and intimate partner violence. She is a P.O.S.T. certified expert on human trafficking and has trained hundreds of prosecutors in Alameda County and San Francisco on human trafficking cases. She has also instructed Bay Area police academies on investigating and reporting domestic violence cases. Upon joining DA Price’s team, Evanthia trained local law enforcement professionals to serve as expert witnesses in domestic violence cases.
Evanthia is a former Adjunct Professor of Criminal Litigation at Golden Gate University and a guest instructor on Evidence at USF Law School.
“Evanthia Pappas is a well-respected leader in our office and has more than two decades of experience as a prosecutor with an unwavering commitment to justice and an inspiring pursuit of fairness and integrity within the criminal justice system,” said DA Price. “We look forward to interim Chief ADA Pappas using her seasoned prosecutorial perspective as a trial attorney along with her professional judgment and managerial background during the reorganizational phase of the DA’s office.
I want to publicly thank former Chief Assistant DA Otis Bruce Junior (OBJ) for his tremendous role as a key figure on our transition team. OBJ worked tirelessly throughout the past year-and-a-half, using his prosecutorial wisdom and guidance to motivate our prosecutors to meet and overcome so many obstacles in our journey to achieve justice on behalf of victims of crimes and all of the residents in Alameda County. He is a committed public servant who constantly expresses his appreciation for the hard work and sacrifices that each member of our office makes every day. We certainly wish him well as he continues his lifetime commitment to public service and civic engagement. In fact, this week, Chief Bruce is being inducted as the President of the Rotary Club of San Rafael, and he continues his leadership as the President of the Board of Directors of the Marin Athletic Foundation, in addition to many other civic and philanthropic endeavors.”
