Our Mandate
The California Constitution, California Codes, and case law define the duties of the District Attorney.
We represent the People of the State of California in criminal, civil and juvenile matters. We investigate and prosecute crimes and bring civil actions involving consumers, workers, real estate and environmental matters. We are stewards for racial justice in the criminal justice system and the Legal Advisor to the Grand Jury. Our Victim Witness Advocates provide trauma-informed support and advocacy for victims and witnesses of crime and assist them with claims for compensation. We administer resentencing and reentry support programs for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated residents.
California State Bar Rule 3.8 – Special Responsibilities of the Prosecutor (Comment 1)
A prosecutor has the responsibility of a minister of justice and not simply that of an advocate. This responsibility carries with it specific obligations to see that the defendant is accorded procedural justice, that guilt is decided upon the basis of sufficient evidence, and that special precautions are taken to prevent and to rectify the conviction of innocent persons.
